One of the best ways to make your writing stronger is to cut unnecessary words. Many people tend to over-write, often in a similar way to how they would speak. Words creep in that add no meaning and can make a piece of writing sound vague and woolly rather than confidence and precise.

The Guardian and Oxford University Press recently opened for submissions for a Very Short Film Competition, which challenged UK students to produce a one-minute film about a subject they feel passionately about for a chance to win a year’s tuition fees.
This one, on Quantum Locking by Christian Foss was one of 4 finalists as voted by the British public. It’s concise and beautifully shot but it didn’t win. The winner was this film on evolution by Sally LePage. Sally was awarded £9,000 for her year’s tuition (but I still think Christian should’ve bagged it!)!
This promotional clip for John Smedley long johns is gorgeously delivered with thanks to a simple but great idea and a very talented grip, here’s what the makers have to say about it;
“This piece consists of a “one shot” walk through the history of Long Johns. Shot on location at the John Smedley factory.
We achieved the film via shooting the piece at 60 F/PS, whilst moving through the set with the help of a very skilled grip. We had to get from one end of the set to the other within 60 seconds, for the piece to then translate into a 120 second clip.
We achieved this shot in 12 takes and had a blast along the way.”
